Meet a Hodger: Morgan Edwards

Although he was born and raised in Goochland County to the west of the city, Morgan Edwards  considers himself a Richmonder at heart. Growing up on a farm brings some serenity, but around the time he turned 10, he and his family relocated and left farm life behind.

He came to the city to become a Ram, and now he’s bringing that same spitfire VCU spirit to our agency.

If you haven’t already, meet Morgan Edwards.

Why did you decide on a career in PR?

My major was journalism at VCU. I got there when I was about 24, so I wasn’t super old, but I had already sort of had that time where I was thinking about what I wanted to do with my life. I had been really into photography. It’s been a hobby of mine for a while. And I decided one day, “Well, maybe I should just do this as a career. You know, like why, why not just do what I love?”

So long story short, I went to VCU to go to the art school for photography, but I then decided that I wanted to do something that had a more of a balance. I grew up already having an interest in that, so it was something I knew.

What are the biggest misconceptions about working in public relations?

For me, it’s weird because I’ve only really been in this career for a short period. Talking to friends who do PR, it sounds like PR pros are expected to solve just about any marketing problem, even things that are sort of just impossible. At the same time, it’s a profession where you can challenge yourself and learn what kind of capacities you have.

What’s your favorite Richmond eatery?

This is a tough one. A big one is Heritage. It’s a Southern cuisine restaurant in the Fan. It has been there for about 10 years. It’s definitely one of those busy kinds of restaurants. Two honorable mentions are Rappahannock, a seafood spot that’s on Grace, and Kuba Kuba.

What advice do you have for young people who want to get into public relations?

Don’t go into it because it sounds easy or you think, “Oh, I want a cool job.” Go into it if you care about it. One of the biggest things to do is constantly try to be as curious as you can about the world now. It sounds super corny, but I think it helps because if you’re always asking questions and trying to learn new things, travel, and things like that. That curiosity will help you as a PR pro.
