Becoming a Unicorn Candidate in a Crowded Entry-Level Job Market

Editor’s Note: Big thanks to our summer intern, Lindsay Lawrence, for sharing her smarts on the Gong Blog.
Whether it’s searching for an internship or a full-time job after graduation, standing out in today’s competitive job market can be challenging. The secret to success lies in developing a unique mix of skills and experiences, transforming you into a unicorn candidate.
So, how do you become a true unicorn? It starts with leveraging every experience you’ve had, no matter how niche, and demonstrating your ability to wear many hats. Here’s how you can set yourself apart!
Relate Every Experience to the Job
Even seemingly unrelated experiences can translate into valuable skills for the corporate world. For example, working at a restaurant might not directly scream “agency experience,” but it does teach you how to work under pressure and communicate efficiently with others.
The key is to frame your past background in ways that align with the job description. When I applied for my first digital media internship, I talked about my personal social media habits and my passion for staying up to date with trends. Additionally, I highlighted what I learned in my social media marketing class to demonstrate my understanding of the field.
By connecting these academic experiences to real-world scenarios, you can illustrate an ability to thrive in similar situations on the job.
Craft a Unique Website Portfolio
One of my favorite ways to make a great first impression towards employers and stand out in a competitive job market is by showcasing my work through a portfolio website. I created mine using Canva, a user-friendly platform that allowed me to design a site that’s visually appealing and personalized.
Be sure to include a diverse range of work: class projects, freelance gigs and even personal passion projects. Don’t forget to make it creative and easy to navigate! A great portfolio doesn’t just tell employers what you can do, it shows them. Then, once you have that done, make sure you add it to your LinkedIn page (yes, employers check your LinkedIn profiles so make sure it shines, too).
Leverage Your Alumni Network
An underrated way to stand out in the job market is by utilizing your alumni network. Alumni who share school pride are often eager to help students and recent graduates navigate their career paths.
Start by researching alumni who work at companies you’re interested in and connect with them on LinkedIn. A simple message expressing admiration for their career journey and asking for a quick coffee chat can go a long way. These conversations can provide great insights into the company culture, application tips and even opportunities to get your resume in front of the right people.
Earn Certifications Through Online Platforms
In today’s digital world, certifications are a great way to demonstrate your commitment to learning and staying ahead of the curve. Platforms like HubSpot Academy, Google Skillshop and LinkedIn Learning offer free or affordable courses.
Adding these certifications to your resume (and your LinkedIn and website portfolio) shows employers that you’re proactive, resourceful and tech savvy—all traits of a unicorn candidate.
Gain a Variety of Experiences to Stretch into Multiple Roles
The current job market often demands candidates who can wear multiple hats.
For example, an internship might involve managing social media, copywriting and conducting research—all tasks that could easily be separate jobs at larger companies. Similarly, class projects, part-time jobs or volunteer work can help you develop skills that translate into professional roles.
The more variety you have, the better you can adapt to a job market that values flexibility. Highlighting these experiences on your resume demonstrates your ability to tackle challenges from multiple angles, making you a strong asset to any team.
