If a gong bangs in the snow, can you hear it?

Even a half a foot of snow in Richmond (and three inches in New Jersey where Stacey lives) can’t stop us from celebrating media relations success. First, a great placement for Sandler Training, the leading global sales and leadership training outfit. This CIO.com placement quotes Sandler VP Brian Sullivan sharing his thoughts on using LinkedIn for lead generation. A true team effort on our end and a month in the making. Second, a national placement for a just-released survey from Monmouth University pollster, Patrick Murray,…

Random Friday thoughts, snarky and unsnarky

It’s summer, it’s a Friday, it’s time for random thoughts… Sat down with a long-time client and friends this week and as a result I’m pledging to become more of a “partner” with my clients moving forward.  It is something we have to remind ourselves about from time to time but at the end of the day their success is our success. I’m hoping that Richmond’s wildly successful Social Media Club is not becoming just another group that just enjoys hearing more about each other…

Ode to the Big Man.

Other than the post I wrote after my father's death, this is perhaps the most difficult post I've had to write. For those of you who are not fans of Bruce Springsteen and the E Street Band, I can sort of understand why you think those of us who are, are indeed a bit crazy. I was a later bloomer myself especially for a kid from Jersey who went to Rutgers in the late 70's. I didn't "find religion" so to speak until that fateful…

Facebook Places:  The Monster has been fed.

So there I was a bachelor for the night (Kyra and the kids are in NOVA, their annual pilgrimage to the Price William County Fair) and I stumbled on a new production of Live from Lincoln Center.  They were doing South Pacific with Kelli O’Hara and the closet Broadway freak that I am was ready to settle into “One Enchanted Evening.” One last Twitter check. A mad dash to the computer later and I was watching “Mark Z. and the FB’s” clad in their t-shirt…

Facebook…the Foursquare killer?

The folks over at Foursquare and other geo-location applications are holding their collective breath today. It has been widely reported that tomorrow is the day that Facebook will officially announce that it will be getting into the geo-location business as well. This has been teased for months but the hope is further specific details will be released. So today is speculation day and here are some of the questions: Aside from being able to “check-in” on their mobile Facebook APPS, how will Facebook bring this…

The Jets, Revis and the art of public negotiation

Full disclosure, I’ve been a Jets fan since birth.  Dad had season tickets at Shea.  I saw Joe Namath play.  The family went to Miami so Dad could attend the Super Bowl.  It’s been a long “sufferer” since then.  Nuff said. So obviously, I’m hanging on every word of the very public negotiation between the Jets, owner Woody Johnson and GM Mike Tannenbaum on one side, and cornerback Darrelle Revis, the coach-proclaimed “best defensive player in the NFL.” The two sides are still miles apart…

Facebook….at it again….

All over the world today folks who manage Facebook Fan pages are scrambling once again. Late yesterday our fine friends announced changes to custom landing pages that will likely force the redesign of a certain percentage of those pages as FB literally squeezes the width of the custom designs to fit into the crystal ball that is Facebook’s future.  About ten months ago Facebook told us these changes would take place in a number of weeks.  I guess we now know what calendar they use….

Social media execution is a collaborative process

Interesting blog post by Lauren Fernandez on the Radian6 (social media monitoring firm) blog today exploring the question “Should Agencies Execute Social Media?” In it she details some of the factors that go into that decision including the now what seems to be long-time debate of “who should do what” and some rules of the road like planning, education, etc. Personally, and for obvious reason, I’m glad to see the conversation move from an absolute yes or no and more towards how agencies and clients…

Is Tumblr for ya?

So we were in a client meeting last week discussing our social media proposal which focused mainly on Facebook and he said, “Did you see where Facebook is losing traction among teens, I just want to make sure we’re keeping an eye on what’s next.” Then I read this article in The New York Times touting the sort of microblog Tumblr as Facebook and Twitter’s New Rival. The article points out that media companies and outlets like Newsweek and The Today Show are using Tumblr…

Facebook landing pages:  Pros and cons

Over the first half of this year we've had the opportunity to work with a number of clients as they expand their presence and communities on Facebook.  In some cases, we have designed fun contests with viral elements.  In others we have created customized landing pages for designed to inform, driving traffic, increase community and extend the client's brand. After some learning, I'm comfortable enough with our own experience to share those experiences and talk about what has worked and things to keep our eyes…
