The Rundown May

Blink and you might’ve missed it. Earlier this year we revamped our monthly newsletter, The Press Box, to include some of the industry-related news and trends we’re talking about around the Hodges office. Think of this aptly named section, The Rundown, as your monthly recap of all things PR, social and content. Millennials makin’ bank? Find them on Instagram.

Not surprisingly, 59 percent of Instagram users are between the ages of 18 and 29. Makes sense. What is shocking is that 31 percent of those Millennial users earn more than $75,000 per year. Brands, hop on Instagram, because you’ve got young, digitally savvy consumers with cash to spend.

A case for gated content…

If you are on Instagram (and you happen to follow a bunch of teenage girls), you may have noticed earlier this month that your feed was likely inundated with the same red bathing suit photo. That’s because student-run retailer, Sunny Clothing Co. ran an influencer campaign so good, it was bad. The brand advertised an incentive that offered users who reposted its photo a free bathing suit (a $64.99 value). Sounds like a good idea until it went viral… too viral.

Sometimes it pays to make users give a little to get a little, and social media’s reaction was priceless.

Yummy Content

Appliance juggernaut Whirlpool just bought Yummly, the image-based recipe search engine with over 20 million users. Why should you care? Because it’s yet another example of a major company showing the importance and influence of content marketing and data. Yummly gives Whirlpool access to thousands of users and recipes it could potentially integrate and pair with products.

RIP to a PR Great

Al Golin started working for a drive-in hamburger chain in 1957 and encouraged the company to support local causes. His PR firm, Golin, still works with McDonald’s today. Mr. Golin passed away in late April after a successful lifetime in the PR industry. His biggest advice to executives: don’t take yourself too seriously.

Picture Perfect

Sometimes budgets are small and time is limited, but that’s no reason for the quality of your photos to falter. A smart content strategy includes sophisticated photos and videos. PRSA sourced a few pro tips so the rest of us can step up our game. Our favorite grab-and-go tip? We’re torn between setting the stage and treating photos like headlines.
