Curating Content on Twitter

It’s important to keep your Twitter feed flowing with updated content, both original and a curation of the most relevant and useful materials for your audience.

Curating content on Twitter has a number of benefits, including:

  • Growing your authority and expertise on a subject.
  • Improving your relationship with the sites whose content you share.
  • Saving time from creating content yourself.

Keep in mind that curated content isn’t only about aggregating and reposting other people’s content; it can also be those terrific original insights you offer, or a combination of both. Aim to become a resource to your audience and offer the latest trends, news and best practices in your industry. Here are some tips for curating content on Twitter.

Keep the Content Coming

So where does all this great content flow from? There are many streams from which to draw. Use an influencer amplification tool like BuzzSumo to find top influencers on just about any topic. Aggregators like Feedly bring all of your favorite sources together, and you can search for articles, videos and podcasts beyond your feed. You can also sign up for Google alerts on specific niche topics, subscribe to pertinent newsletters from industry thought leaders, and use apps like Pocket to tuck away future post ideas.

Creating Lists

Lists are one of the best tools Twitter offers to help you find influencers who retweet, favorite and reply the most often. Create a list of your key influencers and pull the content that strikes you as something worth sharing. You can also use and subscribe to other people’s public lists of key influencers.

Once you’ve established the process that works best for you, don’t forget to regularly visit your pool of content.

Schedule Time to Sort

Timing is important. You do not want to share an article that may be time-sensitive one month after it has posted. Schedule an hour or two a week to sit and sift through your content. Hand-select which articles catch your interest and are most relevant to you. Chances are, if it interests you, it will interest your followers.

Make a habit of crafting a Tweet as soon as you’ve finished an article. The information is fresh and what better time to form a response, your opinion or pull one thing that was most intriguing to you?

Schedule & Share

Use a social media management system to schedule and share your posts. Pull both your and other people’s lists into streams on Hootsuite, and then simply pick the dates and times you want them to go out to your followers.

TweetDeck is free and another easy way to schedule Tweets ahead of time.

There are a number tools to help you collect content and manage your Twitter account. Don’t forget, spending just a few hours curating and scheduling Tweets each week will save you time, lend you credibility and is even a great way for you to stay up to date with what’s going on in your industry.
