The Best Perk You Can Offer Your Employees Might Surprise You

We talk a lot about workplace culture here at Hodges, and creating and contributing to an environment where coming to work every day is truly fun. On any given day, the Hodges culture might shine through in various ways – birthday celebrations, a Thanksgiving potluck, our annual baseball outing – but one piece we’re all particularly proud of is the numerous ways we’re able to volunteer our time in the community, whether it’s through sitting on boards where we can lend our public relations and communications expertise or flexing our event-planning muscles.

The Virginia Capital Trail. PRSA Richmond. Classical Revolution RVA. Commonwealth Community Trust. Community Idea Stations. Family Lifeline. Massey Cancer Center. AMA Richmond. Cookies for Kids’ Cancer. Side by Side. Celebrate! RVA. Those organizations are just a sampling of the different organizations in the Richmond community where Hodgers are involved.

Two of our own, Sean Ryan and Cameron McPherson, have both even been recognized in recent years by Style Weekly in the annual 40 Under 40 designations for their personal efforts to give back to causes that are important to them personally.

In some offices, finding the time to volunteer might be cumbersome – how will you make the monthly meetings? Is the commitment too much to tackle on top of an existing workload?

Here? Let’s just say if you had the chance to be a fly on the wall during an employee’s annual review, one of things you might overhear from the firm’s partners is back and forth on how to get an employee more engaged in the community.

Of course, our clients come first. But we’ve found that when as a company we’re engaged in the community, it benefits us and our clients, too. We bring ideas to the table for events, collaborations and partnerships that may not have clicked without getting to hear about the good work of Hodgers right here in RVA.

If you’re considering your workplace culture, don’t just think about what you can give to your employees. Think about how you can help them give back, too. It might just be the best perk you have to offer!
